Toyo Toolbox

I picked up the Toyo Y-350 last year and it immediately felt like something special. It’s a Japanese steel toolbox that hasn’t really changed in decades, and that shows in the best way. The design is simple, durable, and considered, with that balance of form and function that doesn’t need updating.

Toolboxes for me usually end up as a bit of a dumping ground. Less about organisation, more about convenience. So I wanted this one to be different. Something I could actually use day to day without digging through it every time I needed something small.

I started by 3D printing divider inserts. They worked well for a while, but I kept running into the same issue. The vertical space wasn’t being used properly, and smaller tools would just disappear to the bottom.

After that, I designed some trays to sit on top of the inserts. That changed things quite a bit. It gave me another layer of storage, but also something I could lift out and place on my desk while I worked.

The last step was the most time consuming. I wanted inserts for my most used tools that actually fit them properly, so I started learning Fusion 360 and modelling everything from scratch. It took a while to get right, but it made a noticeable difference.

Now it feels like everything has a place. It is not just storage anymore, it is something I actually use.
